Yet among the deluge of would-be cash cows and Oscar grabs lies an interesting nugget. ![]() I complain every year about the sheer number of major studio releases that are dropped over the last two weekends of the year, and 2014 is no exception. I hope it opens on December 18th, 2015 with a family-friendly/kid-friendly PG rating from the MPAA. But I do hope that The Force Awakens stays true to its franchise roots in one specific way. The images we see, a familiar X-Wing, an emphasis on realistic looking environments, and that iconic glimpse of the Millennium Falcon, seemed designed not to tease a whole new world of adventure but rather a return to the adventure you're most familiar with, but that's a discussion for another day. I don't know if the new Star Wars movie will be any good or to what extent it will be glorified fan service. I don't know how much over/under $1 billion it will earn worldwide when it drops next December. ![]() Since the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens dropped on Friday morning to the tune of 40 million views as of today, there has been much discussion about whether or not the new footage (as brief and sparse as it is) hearkens back to the original trilogy as opposed to the less-respected prequel trilogy.
